Celebrating Coker's 125th Anniversary

October 3, 4 & 5, 2008

From 1883 to 2008, Coker UMC has been in ministry on a historic parcel of land given to "Fighting Jack" Coker for his heroism in the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive 1836 battle of the Texas Revolution.  We will celebrate the 125th Anniversary as a Methodist Church on these historic grounds October 3, 4 & 5.  Please SAVE the dates.

Friday, October 3, come to the Homecoming Party from 7:00 to 11:00 PM at the Jewish Community Center (12500 NW Military HWY--click here for a map).  Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88s will provide the music and entertainment.  There will be dancing, snacks, and lots of fun and fellowship as we welcome back old friends and make new ones.  Tickets are available by calling the Coker office, 494-3455.  Adult tickets are $25; children and youth tickets are $10.  Babysitting will be available.  You won't want to miss this kick-off to the big celebration!

Saturday, October 4th, Music Ministries will lead an Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing at 6:30 pm in the Sanctuary.  This will be followed by an Ice Cream Social with yummy ice cream treats provided by Schwann, sponsored by the Youth Department.

Sunday, October 5th is the BIG CELEBRATION DAY.

  • We start with regular worship at 8:15 am in the Sanctuary.
  • At 9:30 am the photographer will be set up to take a great panoramic photograph of all who are gathered for the 125th.  This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a special part of history.
  • There will be no Sunday school.
  • At 10:00 am, Boy Scout Troop 285 will unveil a historical plaque which they are presenting to the church to commemorate the 125th.
  • From 10:30 am to 12:00 noon, we will have a special worship service.
  • Then it’s dinner on the grounds under the tent.  A Texas-style barbeque lunch, hosted by the UMM, will be served from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

But that’s not all!  Join the Family Festivities for fun, games, and pony rides from 12 noon to 4:00 pm.  Come visit with some of Jack Coker’s descendants, and tour the Coker Cemetery.  There will be historic photo displays and videos in the Wesley & Gibbs buildings, and a prayer labyrinth in the Upper Room of the Gibbs building.  There will be inflatables, games, and family fun on the lower parking lot.  Then we’ll go on to continue serving in the next 125 years of ministry beside the Salado Creek.
