How our service fits into the Habitat for Humanity PlanHabitat for Humanity of San Antonio has completed the building of a large scale neighborhood on San Antonio’s south side called Palo Alto Community. We have built 282 simple, decent and affordable homes with families in need in this location.
With Palo Alto Community’s completed, Habitat moved on to a new building site in August 2011. Last year we purchased 39 acres of vacant, raw land in the south west side of San Antonio (about 5 miles away from the current location). This land has all the great qualities of our current community and therefore is a great fit for our next Habitat neighborhood. This new community will be named Coleman Ridge. It is located near the corner of Old Pearsall Road and Loop 410. It is a 20 - 25 minute drive from downtown.
Coleman Ridge is in a great location for our families to thrive. The land is immediately adjacent to an elementary school that will open this August. It is within a few miles of one of the largest community colleges in San Antonio, Palo Alto College. The land is very accessible to retail, bus lines and major highways and thoroughfares.
Coleman Ridge will impact our city by providing a strong and vibrant community of empowered homeowners. The Habitat houses will enhance the area and prompt neighbors to begin to clean up and beautify their existing properties and buildings. It will create more of a community environment around the new elementary school in which families will take more pride and become more involved in their neighborhood’s well-being and safety.
Our homes are extremely well built and energy efficient (we built according to LEED Level I, Energy Star and CPS Smart Energy standards) and will continue to be affordable and low maintenance to the families who will own them. Additionally HFHSA homes provide stability to neighborhoods – our very low foreclosure rate of less than 1.5% means families will be in their homes for the long term.
The population of our service area is approximately 1,401,400. When all phases are complete, this new Habitat development will benefit 185 very low-income families in San Antonio who without the Habitat for Humanity program would have no ability to purchase an affordable home in San Antonio.
