School Information 2010-2011

GOALS:

Coker Day School provides for its students a happy first departure from home, a secure, anxiety-free atmosphere, and an academically sound readiness for elementary school.  We instill in each child the joy of learning and make each one feel special.  Our school has been in operation for over 48 years.  It is our goal to meet each student’s social, spiritual and cognitive needs and to prepare them for future schooling.  We offer all the prerequisite skills for school success in a Christian environment.  Coker Day School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

HEALTH INFORMATION

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services requires us to have a health form on file for each child.  This form is filled out and signed by the physician and parent.  It must be complete and filed in the office within one week of admission.  These forms are mailed during the summer for the fall semester, but they can also be obtained in the school office.

TRANSPORTATION AND ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL:

Transportation is arranged by the parents.  Carpools may be formed before and after the start of school.  Parent volunteers and school staff are on hand to receive and load children at our drive-through area in an organized, safe manner.

FUN DAY:

Fun Day is offered to parents who wish to "extend" their child's day before or after preschool or kindergarten classes.  The children bring a lunch to eat and join other Fun Day friends for indoor and outdoor fun.  3s, 4s, Pre-K and Kindergarten can enjoy Fun Day from 11:45 to 3:00.  See the School Information Booklet or call the school office for more details on Fun Day.

CONFERENCES:

Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled periodically for all students.  However, any parent or teacher may request a conference at any time.  Staff members offer their home phone numbers as well for after-school communication.

CHAPEL:

We begin each class session in Coker Chapel with Bible stories, verses, songs, and prayers.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND SCHOOL CALENDAR:

Coker Day School observes the same school holidays and "bad weather" days as North East Independent School District.  We do not, however, observe the "early dismissal dates" as NEISD does.  Our "start date" and last day of school vary from year to year.  Check in with the school office for these dates each year.  Coker Day School offers many "special days" throughout the year.  Calendars and explanations are sent home to families on a monthly basis to inform everyone of these occasions.

CURRICULUM:

We balance academic skills with creative work, free play in and out of the classroom, music, storytelling, circle time, snacks, library, field trips, chapel, "show and tell", etc.  We are proud of our curriculum for each age level and encourage your interest in specifics.  All of our students receive weekly Music and Fitness classes.  (Ask in the school office for more detailed curriculum information).

3 YEAR OLDS:

These classes focus on the child's first year in the school setting.  We help the children develop a positive self-image and confidence, both socially and academically.  Developmental goals include:
  • Sharing, group activities, social behaviors, following directions
  • Table work using crayons, scissors, clay, paint, and other art media
  • Unit studies including: Colors and Shapes, Numbers, Science, Bugs/Insects
  • "Free" play, inside and outside, to help develop friends and a love of school

4 YEAR OLDS:

These classes will develop academic, social and motor skills through activities including:

  • Letter recognition and beginning phonics
  • Handwriting and fine motor skills
  • Number recognition
  • Listening, visual discrimination and other readiness skills
  • Specialized units of study
  • Field trips

PRE-KINDERGARTEN

The enrollment of a child in the Pre-Kindergarten class is determined by the child's birthdate, testing, and/or teacher recommendation.  Most of these children are "younger" 5 year olds and will attend another year of preschool before entering Kindergarten.  This is a "Gift of Time" class to enable the child to have an extra year of maturation and growth.  Academics include:
  • Visual and listening skills
  • Pre-reading and language development
  • Sequencing and equivalence of numbers
  • Exposure to beginning and ending letter/sound association
  • Printing upper-and lower-case letters
  • Specialized units of study
  • Field trips

KINDERGARTEN

Our Kindergarten class is highly regarded throughout the district for its excellence.  Our students will be exposed to:
  • An enriched phonics program coupled with language activities
  • Math skills: identifying; counting; addition and subtraction; money values; time; measurement
  • Handwriting Without Tears Curriculum
  • Specialized units of study
  • Enrichment Classes: Spanish, Cooking and Nutrition, and Music Appreciation
