Blood Pressure Coordinator and Volunteers Neededby Sherry Hatcher
The Health & Wellness Committee is currently searching for a Coordinator for monthly blood pressure screenings along with volunteers to help on a month to month basis with the screenings. The Coordinator would be responsible for scheduling volunteers the third Sunday of each month and for making arrangements for written communication within the Coker community. We have all the equipment needed and our previous Coordinator, Liz Hoelscher, has reserved the space and made arrangements for all written communication for the remainder of 2009. When Coker began blood pressure screenings 12 years ago, I thought, “What a strange idea to do blood pressure screenings at church!” As I prayed about this ministry and opportunity for service, I came to understand that God calls us to take care of our physical bodies so that we may better serve Him. I also understood that good health is a blessing that God wants each of us to enjoy but one that we are ultimately responsible for! Monthly blood pressure screenings bless so many. People’s lives are touched and changed. Through referrals for follow-up with their physicians, individuals of all ages (even college students) are diagnosed with and receive treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). Sometimes other medical problems such as diabetes are discovered and once a gentleman received a pacemaker the very next day after having his blood pressure checked at Coker! Frequently people are referred to their physician and receive changes in their medication. High blood pressure is referred to as “The Silent Killer” because most people have no symptoms. Regular blood pressure screenings at Coker provide opportunities for teaching individuals about good health and the importance of regular medical care. What a moment of rejoicing it is each time someone comes back and shares their success in blood pressure management, weight loss, more exercise, and a healthier body! Please prayerfully consider if God is calling you to touch people’s lives through this ministry. Can you volunteer on a month by month basis? Are you being called to coordinate this ministry? Please contact Sherry Hatcher if you hear God’s call: suburbanmom511@satx.rr.com or 210-490-0582. |
