God has blessed us.

The time is now.

We are ready.

The mission of Coker United Methodist Church is to "make disciples, rooted and growing in Christ."  This is scripturally based and thoroughly Methodist.  Guided by prayer, with input from the congregation, the the "Growing Beyond Today" Task Force developed an updated vision based on Coker's continuing mission.  On November 13, the Church Conference approved the following vision and goals.

Vision

God has blessed us.  The time is now.  We are ready.

We, the congregation of Coker United Methodist Church, commit ourselves to being an exemplary community for the development of the mind, body, and spirit of Christian people in every stage of life.  We dedicate ourselves to being a caring family of faith by connecting people to God and one another through small group ministries.  We commit to recruit, equip and deploy our members for life and ministry in the world.  We will share our blessings with other disciples of Christ as we become a primary coordination and launching point for mission outreach around the globe.

Goals

We are proud of Coker UMC's heritage and excited about our future.  Much has already begun.  The key word is "beyond."  We want to build on our blessings and grow beyond today.  Seven goals statements further define our vision.

  • Celebrate our strengths and Coker UMC's 125th anniversary, as we recommit ourselves to discipleship through our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.

Coker UMC's 125th anniversary will be a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, to excite and mobilize the whole congregation.  To grow Coker UMC's ministries beyond today and increase our external impact, we first need to revitalize our discipleship to prepare for further service.

  • Enhance prayer life, worship opportunities and music ministries.

We could all benefit from enhancing our prayer life, individually and as the Body of Christ.  Additionally, we want to offer many dynamic worship services, to praise and glorify God in a variety of styles and places.

Music is also central to our worship experience. "To sing once is to pray twice." We are blessed with excellent vocal, instrumental, and handbell music, as well as sacred dance. To grow and develop even more, we need more space. Simply, we want to glorify God through enhanced prayer, worship and music.

  • Build up small group ministries with emphasis on families, children and young people.

We believe that every member should be connected to the church so that people notice when they are there. When they are not present, they are missed. The main way we connect people to God and one another is through small groups.  Coker should offer ministries from the cradle to the grave for children, youth, students, adults, families, and seniors.

  • Expand and enhance mission outreach (locally and beyond) with every member in mission.
Mission outreach is how Jesus Christ is offered to the world. Our focus is external - both locally and beyond San Antonio. We want to expand our efforts to recruit, equip and deploy disciples into the world. We want to put people into action to serve and glorify God.

  • Develop health and wellness ministries and build a partnership with Methodist Healthcare Ministries.
We want to develop ministries that encourage healthy minds, bodies and spiritual lives. At Coker we could create a premier recreational ministry for all ages. It could involve partnering with Methodist Healthcare Ministries to establish a health care clinic, offering preventive health care to the un-insured and under-insured. It could include building a Methodist Family Center for Christian recreation and fitness. The possibilities are limited only by our vision and our faith to trust God’s will for us.

  • Intentionally reach out, increase Coker UMC’s visibility and strengthen communications to offer Christ to all.
Coker can no longer be a well-kept secret. The Wurzbach Parkway will reveal our hidden location. We have to be ready. We need to invest in both internal and external communications. All of our communications efforts are for one purpose – to grow the Kingdom of God.

  • Inspire all work area committees to embrace the vision, create work plans to “grow beyond today” and accomplish at least one goal in 2008.

Words without deeds are useless. To grow beyond today, Coker must intentionally and methodically focus on accomplishing our Vision and Goals. In charity and love, we will hold each other accountable.  We have the opportunity to grow the Kingdom of God, not just in our little corner of the world, but throughout San Antonio, Texas, and all across the world.

God has blessed us. The time is now. We are ready.

Let us take action.
